The Government and Friendly Societies. [By Telegraph. ] [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Nelson, This Day.

The foundation-stone of the new Oddfellows' Hall was laid yesterday afternoon by Mayor* Trask. Amongst the speakers was the Hon. R. Seddon, Minister for Public Works, who had just arrived from Wellington. He spoke highly of the principles and objects of Friendly Societies, and stress was laid on his utterance that the Government wonld allow no legislation that had for its object an injurious effect on the present Friendly Societies. He did not think it was for the Government to take up tho work now done by these societies, and held that the Government should restrict itself to watching their financial position.
