CITY COUNCIL.
An ordinary meotihg of tho City Council was held last evening, and was attended by tho Mayor, and Councillors Pethorick, Moeller, Frasor, Smith, Willeston, Harris, Vogol, Andorson, and Clere. A letter was read from Mr. Hope, asking, on behalf of certain residents of Meln and Owen streets, that tho electric lamp should be removod from its present position in the formor thoroughfnro to a moro convenient site in the locality. Tho letter was reforrod to the Publio Works Committee. Messrß. E. W. Mills and Co. wrote that a consignment of tho explosive known as bellito bad been removed from their warehouse to their fireproof prcmisos elsewhere, the magazine authorities having doclined to store it. Tho firm oxplained that tho oxplosive was not considorod dangerous, and had boon brought out from Homoas ordinary cargo. Tho Town Clerk explained that ho had again written pointing out that the compound ought not to be stored insudo the city. On tho motion of Councillor Harris, seconded by Councillor Frasor_, tho matter was referred to tho Firo Brigades Committee. A lotter was read from Mr. J. Kershaw, asking that the footpath at tho cornor of Austin and Elizabeth streets should be made tho full width. Reforrod to tho Public Works Committee. Tho Public and Private Vohicles Bjr-law Amendment By-law, 1891, and tho Sanitary By-law Amendment By-law, 1891, wore confirmed. The report of tho Pnblio Works Committee (published in our columns on Tuesday) was considered. Clause s— "That consent bo not given te tho application of Messrs. Bardsloy Bros, for leave to ostablish a soapboiling business in Adelaide.road." The clause was referred back for further consideration. Clause 7, recommending that tho resignation of Mr. Hamerton, junior clerk, should bo accepted, was adopted, and the question of appointing a successor was deferred, tlio Mayor explaining that it was thought arrangements could be mado to avoid filling up tho vacancy. The othor clauses in the report were adopted.
