No business of importance was transacted at the Bpccial general meeting of the Shipmasters' Association of New Zealand convened for this morning. The Maori will case was resumed before Mr. Justice Richmond to-day, and is proceeding as wo go to press. ■ At the meeting of the Reception to Liberal Members Committee of the Federated Trades and Labour Council, held on Saturday evening, Messrs. Bolt and Kitchen, present by invitation, brought forward the subject of a political organisation on the lines of the National Liberal Association. A resolution •was passed for the formation of such a •tocioty, coupled with a vote of confidence in the progressive policy of tho present Ministry. Enquiries instituted at the Hospital this afternoon disclosed the fact that the injuries to Wm. Le Gras, carpenter of the Tongariro, referred to elsewhere, are more serious than it wai first supposed. The medical authorities at the institution regard tho case as exceedingly critical. Owing to tho non-arrival of many of the delegates appointod to attend the impending Labour Conference, the day of meeting has not yot been decided upon. It is anticipated, however, that the deliberations of tho Conforoncc cannot commenco until Wednesday, and possibly not till Thursday next. The Reception Committeo appointed by the Federated Trades and Labour Council in connection with the proposed public reception of tho Liberal members by the various Trades Unions met on Saturday evening, and arranged that tho meeting shall be hold at tho Opora House on Monday evening next. Tho following is tho list of civil cases disposed of by Mr. Robinson, R.M., in tho Magistrate's Court to-day, jndgment going for plaintiffs, with costs : — F. Redwood v. J. Hanlon, £2 10s, costs 7s ; B. R. Gardener v. H. Sergeant, £7 3h 2d, costs 11s ; same v. J. Clark, £2 14s lOd, cpsta 7s (to be paid by insttvlmonts) ; Lydia Wright v. Winnie Dco/n, £4 6s Id, costs 6s ; Noble Campbell & Co. v. V. R. Skipworth, .£8 12s 7d, costs 10s. An application was mado to stoy execution in the case of Cameron & Christio v. E. Toms, and his Worship ordered that tho defendant, who had already paid .£3 to tho plaintiffs, should pay £2 13s 2d on July 2nd, and £2 on the 2nd of each succeeding month, until tho jndgment was satisfied. His Honour tho Chief Justice and a special nry of twelve, of which Mr. C. W. Benbow j is foreman, aro occupied to-day^ in hearing an ! action in which Thomas Nicholson, sign painter, &c, of Willis-streot, claims .fiIOOO as damages from W. J. Meek for an alleged blander. Tho claim is based upon expressions contained in two letters written by tho defendant to Mr. John D&nks, as Master, of tho .St. Andrews Lodge of Freemasons, of which plaintiff and defendant arc members. It is allogcd that in n, letter written on or about the sth of Mar(!h tho defendant reforred to the plaintit' an boing a "convicted felon," andinalato communication qualified his statements by writing—"n g— " Ido not only caJl him a convicted folon, but a liberated convict." Dofondant denies having published tho allegations, and as a fot'rth dofonco claims that, oven if ho did so, they wore privileged undor tho constitution of the Lodge, inasmuch that it is tho duty of any member to make communications l ogarding tho character and fitness of another member to the Mastor of tho Lodgo ; fur.thor, that such communications aro always c onfidontial, and ihore is a nsajo woll known 'i-o every member of the Lodgo ns to how they aro to bo dealt with. Mr. Jellicoo is acting on bohalf of the plaintiff and Mr. Gully .for tho defence. Plaintiff's case was finished during tho forenoon, and evidence in dofonco is being takon as we go to press. Mr. J.
