Barnum, Phineas Taylor, the Prinoe of Showmen, was born at Bethel, Conneotiout, sth July, 1810. At the ape of 13, he began 'business on his own account, and in 1834 he vwent to New York, where in 1841 he pur■chased the American Mneenm. by whioh in a few years he aoqnired a fortune. In 1856 he took Jenny Lind to America, and in the previous year went to reside in Connects ■out, where from one speonlation in real 'estate and manufacturing enterprise, he be•oame bankrupt. He effeoted a, oompromise with his oreditors, and resumed the management of the museum, and soon retrieved his fortunes. In 1865, and again in 1868, he was burnt out, and after the latter occasion he retired from business for a few years, when he onoe more took to the showman's profession, and on a much larger soalo. In 1365 he eorvod one term in the Conneotiout Legislature, but was defeated for Congress. His writings »re— " The Life of P. T. Barnum, written by Himself." 1855; •• The Humbugs of the World," 1865 ; and a sort of autobiography, entitled "Struggles and Triumphs," 1869.1
