The Manners-street Gaming Raid.

« REBUTTING EVIDENCE. It waa expeoted that judgment in the charge bronght undor the Gaming and Lotteries Acb against Honry Barton, tobacconist, of Manners-street, would have been given in the Magistrato'x Court this morning, but Mr. Jeflicoe'R absonco. due to his being engaged at tho Hokitika Court, necessitated a fnrther postponement. Previous to the matter being adjourned, Deteotivo Kirby sought and obtained permission to examine a witness whose evidenoo ho said would rebut that given by tho defendant Burton when the caso was last before tho Court. William Georgo Nightingale, it harness maker, tho witness referred to by Deteotivo Kirby, was then put into the box, and stated that ho had been acquainted with the defendant for about a j ear. In January last he received an order from the defendant to make a dice-box for him. Thin wasabouta week after defendant's removal from Willis-street to Manners-street. Witness mado the box accordingly, and delivered it to defendant at his chop and received 7s 6d for it. The

box was made hurriedly, and ho made the bottom of it about a 16th smaller than the top. The box produced was tbe one witness manufactured for defendant. On the evening of the raid mado by the police witness was in the defendant's premises, and saw tho box now in Court thoro. Detectivo Kirby then took pofcsoEsion of it, and he next saw it on the 19th inst. in tho office of tho Clerk of the Court. Tho witness' cross-examination was postponed, and tho case waa romanded for this purpose until Tueadav noxt.
