The Volunteers.
The Guards and City Eifles paraded for Qovornmentinepection fast evening 1 , at Mount Cook Barracks. Present on parade-Garri-son Band, 16, under Drum-Major Davi^; City Bifles, 48, under Captain Collins; Guards, 48, under Lieutenant Royle. In the absence of Lieut-Colonel Butts in the Wairarapa, Captain Collins was in con-., mand, and exercised the men in battalion drill for upwards of an hour, after which they were dismissed to their private paradeß. Sergeant-Major Bell whs also proßent. The City Kifle* will fire a competition at Brans Bay range to-morrow afternoon ; ranges, COO and 700 yards, ten shots at each, the first two to count as eightera, MartiniHenry rifles; five ammunition prizes and marker free. Recruits joining City Rifles 'will attend this evening at the Volnnteer Drillsbed at 8 o'clock to receive their arms and uniform. The non-commissioned officers of the various rifle corps, who recently presented themselves for examination in the new drill, hare all passed a very satisfactory examination in their paper work, the majority of the papers being most creditable. The practical portion of their examination will probably come off on Monday week. 'Ihe Heretaun<ra Light Horse will firs a match to-morrow against a Featherston team, starting at 12.15, at tbo Taita Kange. Heretaungatoam— Scholes, Welch, Menzies, C. Copeland, Chuck, Capstick, W. Prinze, H. Stratford, Pox, G. Pringle. Emergencies — Cudby, Compton, Silna. Tne starboard watch of the Petone Naval Artillery will compete to-morrow atternoon in the first match for Dr. Whitehead's trophy — A. class shots— at the Petono Kange, 200, 300, and 500 yards, liythe position It and C classes, for special prizes. The port watch, being engaged in gun drill, -will shoot in same matches on the following Saturday. All classes of tho Wellington Navala will shoot for class trophies and ammunition prizes to-morrow. A and B Classes will fire at the Kvans Bay R&npe in tho afternoon ; ranges, 600 and 700 yards ; ten shots at each. C and D Classes will fire at the Polhill Gully long range ; ranges, 200, 300, aud 400 yards ; seven Bhots at each. Morning and afternoon squads.
