Referring to the appointment of the Sweating Commission, the Star remarks : — " As has been already intimated, each of the four centres will return two members to the Commission, whose programme has yet to be determined. We should, however, hope that the plan whioh has been eketched semiofficially will not be adopted. There are good and sufficient reasons against the local members making- the enquiries on ' the spot,' as it were. Far better, in the interests of the community, would it be for the investigations in Dunedin to be conducted by the non-resident members of the Commission, who obviously ar6 more likely to be in a position to suggest a needed line of examination than the gentlemen whose names have been mentioned similarly. Mr. Waddell wonld have no delicacy in probing to the bottom matters affecting the trade in Auckland, but these and other matters of detail connected with the enquiry should be settled at the outset by a full meeting of the Commissioners. If they are fc> travel about in sections, each acting independently of the other, nothing but confusion will result. To be of any practical value the enquiry must be thorough and systematic. Lord Onslow holdß his levee this afternoon. At the same time congratulatory addresses will be presented him from the City Council, the Anglican Synod, and the Presbyterian Synod. Captain Sommerville writes stating that the arrangements for the Exhibition Rifle Meeting are proceeding satisfactorily, and there is good reason to believe that there will be a great number of competitors from the Australian colonirs. Queensland, has taken up the matter enthusiastically, and Captain Patterson will bring over a strong team for the intercolonial match. New South Wales, Tasmania, and South Australia will be well represented, but up to date Victoria has not intimated how many men are likely to attend. The meeting will be attended by 500 competitors. Captain Sommerville leaves Wanganni on the 26th December to personally superintend the arrangements for the meecing. | united fbeBs association. | Dunedin, Tbis'Day (2 p.m.) The Governor's levee was very largely attended.
