♦ MR. C. J. JOHNSTON RETURNED UNOPPOSED, As was anticipated, Mr. C. J. Johnston was the only gentleman nominated to-day for the Mayoralty of the City of Wellington for the ensuing year. Rumours had been circulated that at loast ohe "dark horao" would bo brought to the ofiratoh ftt the Irtst moment, but thoso whispers were generally discredited, and therefore it was no matter for wonder that the concourse at the declaration ceremony to-day waa seleot, if not numerous. As the last stroke waß sounded from the Post Office clook, Mr. Jamos Ames, Raturnltlg Officer, appeared on the steps of the City CoUnbil offices and proclaimed that aB. ho had only recoived one nomination for the Office of .jfoe.Chief Magistrate of tho tiity for Oie, ensuing year,,' v\c , tliSt of J; J oHnston, ho should declare that gentlemanduly elected. The declaration was announced to two reporters and one other gentleman. The nomination paper was signed by Messrs. Joseph Kitchen and John Maginnity. MELROSE. The nomination of Mayor of this borough took place to-day at the Counoil Office, Willis-street. The only candidate put forward was Mr. William Heginbotham, the present Mayor, who was nominated by John Collins and Patriok Greave Howden. The Returning Offioer, Mr. W. J.
