A petition is being forwarded to tho Government asking that an inspector of reservoirs should be appointed for tho colony. Mr. Jamcß Allen, M.H.R., is to be asked to present it. Christchurch, 30th July. At the Rangiora Magistrate's Court to-day, Mr. Whiteford, R.M., heard several oases brought by the School Committee to oompel parents to send their children to sohool. ■small fineß were inflicted in each oosp, the Magistrate remarking there was no excuse for keeping ohildren from school, and hoped all oommitteeß would follow the example. The Masonio Union meeting to-night adopted a circular from the Central Exeoutive, and resolved to issue a copy to all Lodges hero requesting them to eleot delegates to attend the Conference in September. An amalgamation of tho old firm of H. Matson and Co. with the National Mortgage and Agency Company is announced in commoroial ciroles. The combination is regarded with favour, and is considered strong. Auckland. 30th July. The members of the Auckland Law Society have passed a motion of condolence with the relatives of tho lato Mr. Justice Gillies. Mr. E. Heßketh, Vice-President of tbo Sooiety, who moyed the proposal, said that by his Honour's death many of them had lost a sincere friend, and the Supremo Court Bench had been deprived of one of its ablest Judges. The Taupiri Extended Coal Mining Company have not declared a dividend for the present half-year, owing to a sum amounting to 50 per cent, having been written off the plant and building aooonnt to allow for depreciation, whioh will take place during the next six months, when the old mine will be cloiod. The Eight Hours Mill has again started work. A meeting of artists and others was held to-day, when Mr. J. L. Holland, Secretary to the Auckland Sooiety of Arts, was appointed to represent Auckland at Dunedin in the art seotion of the Exhibition. The half-yearly meeting of the Auckland Gas Company was held to-day. The usnal dividends of 89 6d on the i>lo shareß, and 4s 3d on the £5 shares, were deolared. Reefton, This Day. The Inkerman Co. to-day declared a dividend of 6d per share, making a total of dividends deolared this month of The County Counoil gets over .£IOOO gold duty from the month's production.
