It is fine weather hi re for tlio holdiday, and tho public, on pleasure bent, are wending their way to the vari-. 114 centres of attraction. At Matarawa, a monster picniu, inaugurated by the Wesleyan pcr.-masion of the Lower Wairarapa, is being held, and judging from tho numerous vehicles moving in that dirootion the attendance should be large. On the Show Ground at Cartorton, the Anniversary sports are in full swing, and tho public have rolled up in large numbers. The fete, which iR for tho benefit of the Anglican Church, comprises games, refreshments, &c. ; in fact it is something like an Old English Fayro, with an athletic programme thrown in. The Maiden Race was won by O'Brien with ease, the distance being 150 yds, and the time 19soc. The first event of the Anniversary Handicap, viz., 100 yds, was contested i>i three heats, and on the placed mon trying conclusions in the final heat, tho result was— Reading, 1 ; Fairbrother, 2 ; D'Arcy, 3. There is an increase of 25 for drunkenness. Mr. Heywood, of tho Albion Hotel, which was destroyed by fire in August hint, has purchased Air. Deschler's well - known hostelry.
