The work of laying the gas mains will be completed, as far as the Square is concerned, this evening. < The iron cylinders for the Pohangina railway bridge are being landed here, and the work of carting- them to the Gorge is by uo means an enviable job. It is reported here that a Dunedm firm are the successful tenderers for the Palmer-ston-Ashurst railway. 21at Jannary. The ratepayers in the whole of that portion of the Manaw&tu Boad District on the Fitzherbert side of the Manawatu River are petitioning for a separate road district. Wild dogs are a great nuisance in the Fitzherbert district. After fire hours' watching on Saturday night, Mr. C. Waldegrave managed to shoot one, and the skin, black i and white, was brought into town to-day. The newly-built Kairanpa School is to be < opened on Wednesday, Mr. Oldham having 1 been appointed master. . Mr. G. Stock, who has been in business < here as solicitor, left to-day for Napier, i where he has received a good appointment. i A movement is afoot to induce the Mana- ' watu Eailway Company to run excursion i trains from Palmerston on Sundays. i A lodge of the Independent Order of Odd- < fellows, under the American constitution, 1 was opened at Bulls on Saturday. \
