The brigade smartly extinguished the fire before the flames got through the roof . The uhedwaß stored with chemicals! and immense volumes of dense and peculiarly pungent smoke poured out, its effeot on the firemen being very painful. Though little damage was done by the fire, about JJ2OO worth of ohemioala were destroyed by water and the breakage of bottles. It is doubtful whether any insuranoes are on the stock or the shed. The cause of the fire was undoubtedly spontaneous combustion. Chbistchubch, 19th November. t About 5 this evening the Sydenham Salvation Army Barracks and the officers' quarters, with a cottage belonging to Thomas Daviß, situated in Battersea-street, were burned down. The fire broke out in the semidetached kitchen behind the Salvation officers' house, and a strong east wind rapidly carried it to the other buildings. No one was in the kitchen at the time. The furniture of all the buildings was saved. The insurance of the (Salvation Barracks is and of the officers' house *8100 in the Standard offioe. Davis' house was inanred for in the Union Company. The barracks was of wood with an iron roof, and was ereoted three years ago, and would seat 700 people.
