IUNITKD PRKBB ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, 19th November. Mr. L. O'Brien, formerly Eegistrar of the Supreme Court, has been re-appointed a Judge of the Native Land Conrt. The total numbsr of shares applied for in the new Moanataiari Gold Mining Company is 36,700. The property, assets, and liabilities of the old company have been taken over. Mr. T. Peaoook, M.H.E. for Ponaonby, addressed his constituents last night, and received a vote of confidence. Captain Colbeck has been eleoted ohairman of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, vice Mr. J. Buohanan, resigned. Two University students— J. T. Nott and E. Auhin— have been elected to the College senior scholarships for the ensning year. At a meeting of the University College Council to-day, Professor Thomas wrote Btating that he had received from a number of teaohers in the country sohools applications for instruction in agricultural soienoe. Mr. Upton pointed ont that the Government attached the utmost importance to these instructions, and he thought the Council should fall in with these views. The matter was referred to a committee of the Counoil for consideration. The fleet of vessels owned by Henderson and Macfarlane are in the market for sale. Owing to a severe throat affeotion, the Eev. F. H. Long, Anglican clergyman at Northcote, has announced his intention of retiring from aotive ministering duties. A man named Franoiß Benjamin was arrested to day for attempting to pass a spurious sovereign at one of the city hotels. The case was remanded until Wednesday. The residents of Whangarei have presented Mr. A. W. M. Bain, late manager of the Bank of New Zealand there, with a gold chain and locket, and Mrs. Bain with a silver tea and coffee servioe. Bishop Luok has received from Cardinal Boinpolli, Secretary of State at the Vatioan, a letter acknowledging the handsome writing table forwarded to His Holiness the Pope as a Jubilee gift from the Catholic clergy of Auckland. The barque Johann Broderson, which put in to Auckland Harbour from Hawaii recently in consequenoe of threatened mutiny on board, has sailed for Guam, a fresh crew haying boen engaged. At a meeting of the School Commissioners, after considering the cases of tenants in arrear in rent, it was deoided to give them notice that unless the arrears were paid in 14 or 21 days, legal proceedings would be taken. Its objeots are to propagate and defend Protestant dootrines, maintain the principles of civil religious liberty, and unite Protestantß of all denominations in one common cause against the errors of Popery and infidelity; to promote the return of Protestant men of principle to Parliament ; to press the claims of the Bible on pnblio recognition, and resist whatever tends to religions inequality. Chbistchurch, 19th November. Last night the offioe of Isaao Allen, a bailiff, was broken into, the back door being forced. Anything in the offioe which was of value was in a safe, and all that was taken were some reoeipts and letters. A portion of the Christohuroh gasworks has been fitted up as a glass factory by E. S. Methuret, formerly of Kaiapoi. To-day several articles were made from glass-sand prooured from varions parts of Canterbury, most of it being from Mount Somers. The glass is free from a green or purple tint, but looks very slightly dull or milky. Tar is used in firing instead of ooal, and it is claimed that a oonaiderable saving in the cost is effected thereby. At the City Council to-night a letter was received from the Gas Company, deolining to surrender rents for metere. The Counofl resolved to adhere to their reaolntion of August last to take steps for the establishment of oity gasworks. m n This Day. The Commission appointed to enquire into the working of the Linooln Agricultural School held its first meeting yesterday. Mr. M'Millan was elected Chairman, and Mr. Jamieson, Secretary. The Christohurch Pigeon Flying Club held its third race this season from Waikaria on Saturday. The winning bird attained a velooity of 1495 yards. The race was won by Mr. Pratt'a Son-of-a-Gnn, doing 46J miles in 54min 30aeo. iNVEECAEqiLi,, 19th November. The Inveroargill Borough to-night seleoted Eiohard Knight, of Melbourne, to manage the Corporation gasworks. There were 23 applications, and the final seleotion lay between Mr. Knight and Mr. Ford, of Sydney. The present manager was an applioant, and was short, securing five of eleven votes. A petition to the Counoil, signed by a very large number of ratepayers, asking for his reinstatement, was recently presented. -
