Mr. D. 8. Wallace, the owner of Mentor, is eaid to have given Miok O'Brien, the jockey, £2500 for winning the Melbourne Cap, and in addition O'Brien backed the horße for a substantial amount. The story of the four Dunedin investors having drawn Mentor in the .650,000 Sydney sweep turns out to be all moonshine. The fortunate drawer of the winning horse was Mr. Gardiner, a New South Wales squatter, who sturdily refused to lay the stable or anybody else a shilling of the .£22,500 net cash which he stood to win and did win. The nominations for the Canterbury Jockey Club Welcome Stakes, 1889, and Canterbury Derby and Oaks, 1890, received on 10th November, were made public to-night. The nominations for the Welcome numbered 77, on« more than those for the present year, and the largest ever raoeived for the stake. The Derby has received 65 nominations, a total whioh exoeeds the previous list record by 8. The Oaks total is 43, whioh is 21 in excess of the last nominations. The New Zealand Stud Company, Middle Park Stud Company, Major George, and Mr. Q. M'Lean are the largest nominators, but most of the prinoipal breeders and racing men of the colony have j horseH engaged.
