THE MAYORALTY.

?- . Although we do not at all agree with the principle kid down recently by Mr. T. Kennedy Macdonald that it ia desirable the Mayor should always be elected by acclamation, we can cordially congratulate the city on the unopposed return of Mr. John Duthie as Mayor of Wellington on the present occasion. It is in every way satisfactory, and marks a decided improvement in the mnnioipal government of the oity. Mr. Duthie is in every way fitted for the position he has been elected to. He is by no means an nntried man, for he has a long and useful record in his services on the Harbour Board. The city is already indebted to him in a large degree for the progress of the reclamation now being carried out, as he ! played an important part in bringing about the friendly arrangement arrived at between the City Council and the Harbour Board. As a business man Mr. Duthie's ability is generally acknowledged, and he is remarkable for his energy. He will find plenty to do in his new office, and we anticipate considerable benefit to Wellington from his exertions. He has an excellent Council to support him and work with, and the citizens may rest assured that the management of civic affairs is now in the hands of thoroughly capable and trustworthy men. We hope that the high standard now attained will be kept up in the future, and that instead of being despised, a seat at the Council table, and the Mayoralty, will alike be deemed honours worthy of being aspired to by the best men in Wellington. We wish Mr. Duthie a prosperous and pleasant tenure of office as Mayor of Wellington.
