| UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Auckland, Bth July. Another fire occurred in Queen-street early this morning in the baok of the premises ocoupied by Jamieson k Smith, bootmakers. Some damage was done to the rear of the building, but the stock was only slightly injured. The insurances on the stook are £850 in the Sonth British office and £400 in the Royal, and the fittings .£IOO in the National. Gbktmouth, Bth July. The town had a narrow escape from a destructive fire this morning. About 7 o'olook Mr. Robert Kettle, grocer, next to the Melbourne Hotel, was awakened by a choking sensation from smoke. He rushed out without waiting to dress, and found a small office beneath the staircase in flames, and the smoke and flame ascending the stairs to where the family reside. Fortunately, a bath tnb of water was handy, and without stopping to give an alarm he fought the fire for a quarter of an hour until he got it under. By this time a passing milkboy raisad an alarm, and the Brigade were soon on the spot. When the charred timber was torn down it was found that the piles under the chimney were also on fire. Nothing but Mr. Kettle's exertions and presence of mind preprevented a serious fire, 'ihe damage is comparatively slight. He is insured for .£450 in the New Zealand office, and £1600 on the stook of groceries. The fire must have been smouldering all night.
