? ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL ON EVERY CHARGE. Henry Herbert Hunt was brought up on remand at tho Magistrate's Court this morning, before Captain Williams and Mr. Andrew Young, Justices, charged with having forged and uttered a cheque for M 10a, on the 24th instant, with iutent to defraud Allan Smith, grocer, Manners-streot. The aocused was undefended. Inspector Browne proseonted. Evidence was given by Allan Smith to the effeot that he know tho accused, and saw him in the Bhop on Saturday last, his business there being to cash a oheque and buy some groceries. Witness cashed the chequo, which was signed " G. H. Baylies." Witness had cashed other cheques by Mr. BaylißS before, and all of them wore honoured. Tho one given by accused last Saturday was returned by the bank sb being a forgery. Witness gave the ohequo to tho detectives. The accused had previously obtained goods at witness's shop. Geo. H. Baylies, contractor, deposod that the accused had been in his employ. The man in his employment was paid once a fortnight by cheqne on the Union Bank. The signature to the cheque produced was not in witness' handwriting, and was not eyen a good imitation. Ho believed the signature was written by the accused. The cheque-book produced was never in witness's possession. Witness was certain that the oheque produced had been taken out of the oheque-book produced. Acting Detective Walker stated on oath that on Wednesday night last ho saw the aocused in the Ship (late Union) Hotel, Willis-street, and asked him whether his name was Hunt. Accused replied " No ; it is Shannon." Witness then asked him whether he had a cheque book in his possession, and ho replied in the negative. Witness then put his hand into the aooneed's coat pocket and took out a cheque-book, whereupon the messed said, ''I'm the man; I'm Hunt." Accused promised to go to the station quietly, but aftor walking about 100 yards he bolted, and witness had to run in order to overtake him. The acoused reserved his defonce, and was committed for trial. Hunt was also charged with having forged and uttered, a cheqne for on the 14th inst., with intent (o defraud Andrew Moren, grocer, Cuba-street. The evidence of Androw Moren wont to show that on the 14th inst. the accused went to his shop and purchased some grocerios, tendering in payment a cheque for £3, purporting to be drawn by Mr. Robert Martin. 'The accused told him that ho was ¦working for Mr. Martin, and that tho cheque was all right. Witness gave accused foods to the valuo of jBI 8s 3d, and the balance in cash. Robert Martin, painter, stated that he did not knew the accused, and the signature to the oheque produced was a forgery. He iad no account at the Union Bank. Accused had never been in his employ. » G. H. Baylis deposed that the handwriting in the oheque was similar to the handwriting of the aconsed on witness' pay-sheet. The acoused was committed for trial. Hunt was further charged with having, on tfce 24th instant, forged and uttered a cheque for .£2 5s with intent to defraud Arthur G. Prioe, draper, Cuba-street.
