Is Hanlan Coming to Australia ?
We take tho following from the Sydney Evening News of the 24th ultimo : —A cable message bearing date 19th August, stated that Hanlan had sailed for Sydney, and that ho talkod of remaining in the colonies. Hanlan's talk does not go for much latoly, and since his defeat by I'eomer little belief will be attached to his repeated assurances that he will visit Australia until he lands, or somothing more definite is known than that ho has sailed from Now York. The cablo message is very_ vague, and would load to tho conclusion that tho ex-champion of the world and tho ox-champion of America had crossed over to England. In that case ho will no doubt have a good look round and see what is doing on that side of the Atlantic It is just probable that he may find it better to remain and see what is to be done with Bubear and Gaudaur. The English ohampion was vory anxious to moot the Canadian oarsman, bnt want of sufficient funds precluded him from doing so ; but if he should make any kind ot a good race with Gaudaur there is no doubt that the necessary stake - money will bo found. It is _to be regretted that Gaudaur permitted himself to be detained in England for a paltry i>2oo, when there were the sculling and double-sculling races promoted by Mr. J. Deoblo, to bo held on the Parramatta in January next, with the certainty of a match with Beach. Had Gaudaur made up his mind to sail for Australia after his second match with Hanlan, there is no doubt that that wily oarsman, in addition to Bubear, Teemer, Ross, and other noted_ American scullers would have followed in his load. As it is, thore is the probability that Hanlan will wait and watch the courso of events on the Thames and in America., as a second trip to Australia will scarcely be a money-making affair.
