FINAL HEAT OF THE JUNIOR CUP MATCH. Although Hip weather was rather cold and looked very threatening fully 500 portions, inxiiy of thum ladieß, assombled at Newtown Park on Saturday afternoon to witnens the first fittccnß of tho Epuni and MelroHo olubs play the final heat of tho Junior Cap Match, froth teams had l>«en slightly altered since the prcviouH match, which it will be recollected endod in a draw. The Franco brothors took the placoH of flamblo and Redding in the Molrosc fifteen, tho two laHt-montioncd boing unable to play. Tbo match was a very interesting ono from a spectator's point of v ! ew. A 1 though tho ground was heavy the play vas rather fast. Tho Melrose had the best of tho play in the first spell, the ball being for the greater part of the time near the Epum 25 line. Tho Kpunis were forced down twico, and Burnß potted a beautiful goal for Melrose towards tho end of tho torm. The score rouHod the Epunis, who had not been playing bo well as thoy usually do, and a grand rush took the leather into the Molrose quartora. Tho attack, however, was repulsed, and when the spell ended soon after thin, the ball was in neutral territory. Fivo minutes after the second spell had commenced, the MolroßO rushed the ball over fie onemy's 25 line, and a kick along the ground sent it over tho goal lino, a soratnblo resulting in Eyre touching down for Melrose. Campbell, a very prominin<j kick, converted the try into a goal. About tho middle of the spoil tho Epunis got into tho Molroso territory and looked like scoring. The Melrofio lads were again too good for them, and tho oonntry toam wore driven baok onoo more. Tho play for tho remaindor of the match was prottv evon. No further scoring was dono. and the game resulted in the defeat of Epuni by two goals (six points) to love. The form displayed by the losers was not at all good. They looked the combination of the opposing team, and seomed to lcmo heart when the Molrono obtained their first soore. Tho absonoe of Woods waß severely felt. R. C. Kirk was suffering from a cold, and did not name up to expectations. Welch (captain) played a rattling game, as also did Allan ana Kemble. Tho play of To Peno and Ano was disappointing. Pitaina and Ransom did excellent servioo. Too much praise oan hardly bo given to tho Melroso team for tho manner in which thoy acquit tod thornholvos. The toam worked woll togethor, and there was an utter absence of selfish play. Thoy thoroughly deserved thoir victory. ■Hunts, liurko, Hoar, Campbell, Church, and Eyro wore tho pick of the players. Mossrs. MoCardoll and Davy acted as umpires, Mr. Knapp being tho rofereo. A JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. A mooting of representatives of first fifteens of junior clubs and second fifteens of senior clubs was held at tho Post Office Hotel on Saturday evenjng, in connection with tho proposal to arrango a match this Reason botwoen junior teams bolo"ging to Wellington and Wairarapa. There wero prosont :— Messrs. Dungan (St. Patriok's Collego), I. HyatoH and MoCullooh (Union), W. Johnson (Poneke), J. R. Gibbons (Athletic), E. J. It was decided that a match should bo arranged for next SaturJay, to come off at Nowtown if possible If, however, the Wairarapa Union cannot send a feara dpwn'tho Wellington fifteen will go up Country. The question of funds was dis. ousscd at length, and tho opinion was expreßßod that the Rugby Union should vote, ■ ty, .£lO toward tho expenses of tho team. It was rosolvod that the Soorotary of tho Union Bhonld be roquosted to oall a meeting of delegates to consider this question boforo Wednesday. Meßara. Knapp, M'Cardle, and I. Hyams wore appointed solectors, and a list of names of each olnb's fifteen was mado ont in tho room, and handed to tho Secrotary for the purpose of facilitating the working of those gentlemen. The mooting was a most enthusiaatio one, and a hope was expressed that annual matches mi<?ht be arranged betweon tho juniors of Wellington and Wairarapa. The annnal match between teams reprosonting the Insurance Companies and the doing business in Wellington will take place at 'Nowtown to-morrow. The following team has been aoleqtfld to play fop tho Banks ;— Brirrqn', Buaholz, Dunaan, Dasent, Draham, Hirschborg, Hume, Hutohinson, Lightfoot, Lueena, McLean, Mitohell, Pyke, Waleß and Yonng. During tne progress of the Junior Cup match on Saturday two of the Melrose players were aorioualy cut on the face, by being kicked, accidentally of course, by an Epuni man, whose boots were tipped with iron. The faat was brought under the notice of the umpires, and the offender was not allowed to continue playing until ho had removed the iron platos. A Melrose player was also found to have tips on his boots, and he was also obliged to comply with the rules. 4-t a convivial gathering of members of the Molroae Club on Saturday evening the Junior Cup was handed over to that body by tho Captain of the Union Club (Mr. J. W. Kilnor), whose team won the trophy laat season. The cup will be hold by tho Mcl r 080 Club until next season, and if not won from them dnring next year's matches, it becomes the property of that club.
