A VOICE FROM AMERICA.

Mr. F. J. Garrick has handed tho Canterbury Press the following extract from a letter ho has received from Mr. John Evans Brown, who was member for St. Albans district in 1881 -4. Mr. Brown is well known 08 a man of great shrewdness and ability, and as ho haH now lived three years in America bis experience is well worth notiDg. He say n : — I do hopo that tho constituencies will not adopt protection, as it would be tho «!eathknoll of the colony. I say, after much inquiry and observation in this sadly overweighted protection oountry, that while wages are higher in New Zealand than in tho United States, you are manufacturing and selling at a price from 20 to 50 per cont. less than hero. Howland, for instance, is manufacturing buggies better in every way, at 50 per cent, leas than they can be purchased in the United States. Tho Kaiapoi Mill Company are manufacturing woollets and selling at a good profit at least 25 per cent, cheaper than can bo purchased here. The tariff in tho United States is simply for tho benefit of tho capitalist and to the detriment of tho wage earner. Everything is taxed because one industry ia protected, consequently a man in America can hardly uso anything which is not protected to death. Thoro are inqrc strikes and more " tramps " in this country than all tho world over, and yet the ignorant popalace are persuaded by tho designing manufacturing party to vote for protection. I am heartily sick of hearing tho platitudes and statistics on both sides, still I cannot refrain from mentioning the subject when writing to you. I presume you will again stand tor St. Albans.
