The Volunteers.

« The annual meeting of the Wellington Rifle Association takes place on the 17th instant. There are several vacancies in the Guards. Persona desirous of joining the corps arc requested to apply to Captain Loveaay. The standard height is sft. Tin. The Petone Naval Artillery will parade this evening. The Petono Naval Artillery Band will meet for practico to-morrow evening. The HeretAiinga Light Horse Cavalry will parade on Wednesday evening at Alicetown. The ICaiwarra Hiflea fired their "second match for the Unlcnown Medal on Saturday, the ranges being 200 and 800 yards, ten shots at each distance. As will be seen by toe subjoined scores, the shooting was very close throughout the match, resulting in Sergeant Ballinger being highest with 79 points, beating Sergeant Colman on the tie. The first eight men made an average of 75 J points per man. The' scores are as follow :—

The Giurdn fired the 16th competition for Mr. J. T. Martin's trophy on Saturday last. The scoringwas very fair, but there ii plenty of room for improvement. Col.-Sergt. Hale and Volunteer W. Ballinger both scored tho same, but the former putting on the moat at tho long range takes first place. The second class shots also nred the first competition for Mr. Tayton's trophy, and Volunteer Tripe, after good steady shooting, topped tho list with C 9, including ft handicap of 3 points.
