SERIOUS ACCIDENT ON AN ORIENT LINER.

The gangway of the Orient Company's rfeamer Liguria fell, injuring twenty-four persons and killing one. The French Government have suppressed the paper Bosphore Egyptien, published at Cairo. Mr. ■ John Fowler, formerly President of the Institution of Civil Engineers and at present Consulting Engineer to the Egyptian Government, has been created a Knight of the* Order of St. Michael and St. George. Flushing, a seport town of the Netherlands, has been made a port of call for the German line of steamers to Australia. The Flying Squadron at present in the course of formation will comprise Beven vessels, and will be under the command of Captain Robert OB. Fitzroy, C.B. The squadron will sail in October. The Russians on the 14th of August occupied Chaman-1-baid, a town about 40 miles from Penj-deh, in a south-westerly direction. A number of Afghans who were in the viciuity at the time were attaoked by the Russian cavalry. Spain has refused to allow the Caroline Islands difficulty to be settled by arbitration. With reference to the seizure of Uap by Germany, the Spanish Governor of that island desired to offer resistance to the landing of the Germans, but the commander of the man-of-war there refused to assist him, and has since been dismissed from the service. Three men-of-war despatched to Uap have been ordered to act with energy.
