THE GLOVE FIGHT. TO THE EDITOR.

Sib— Some time ago I directed attention to the character of waltzing matches, and very good results followed. The some principle then involved I now wish to protest against in the glove Sghte. The question is, " Are brutal powers and instincts to be developed,'of the higher faculties?" If the , former, then exhibitions suoh as described to-night, whero the cembatant is punished or "slogged" out of the fight, will serve the purpose just the same as cookfighting *sd dogfighting would ; but if the latter, then the contests must be deoided in a different way altogether. It is possible for the noble art to be used as a means to the development of quickness and aconraoy of sight, presenoe of mind, and development of chest and musole, that is, if properly directed ; but, on the other hand, if wrongly direoted, it leads to low blackguardism. Undsr the oiroumstances (so graphically put before readers of all classes this evening), it ia a matter for general felicitation that the spectators were able to behavo themselves creditably. I am, Ac, 9th July, 1885. H.B.
