♦ [By TklegraphJ lonitbd peess aBBociation.l Auckland, This Day. The Hon. W. Swainson, first AttorneyGeneral of the oolony, ia dead. [Mr. Swainson wa-j a barrister by profession, and in Augußt, 1841, waß appointed by tho first Govornor, Captain Hobson, J*.N., to saoceed Mr. Francis Fisher as AttoinoyQeneral of New Zoaland, Mr. Alexander Shephord being shortly afterwards appointed Colonial Treasurer and Mr. Andrew Sinclair Colonial Secretary. These three gentlemen wore further appointod by Her Majesty as ex officio members of the Executive. Connoil, and although not members of the General Assembly when it was opened in May, 1854, they retained their office* until the establishment of Eesponsible Government in May, 1856, when they retired. Mr. Swainson long survived his colleagues, and up to a recent period, if not till his death, he retained his Beat in the Exoontiva Council of the Colony, and frequently assisted to make up a quorum when one was wanted in Auckland.]
