THE AUSTRALIAN MUTUAL PEOVL I DENT SOCIETY. THE following artiole on the thirty-fifth annual report of the above Society appears in the Insurance Record of 27th Juno, 1884 :— The Australian Mutual Provident Society, which was established in 1819 for the assurance of lives on tho principl > of mutuality, held its thirty-fifth annual meeting at Sydney on the 23rd April last, when the results presented wore of a very satisfactory charaoer. The progress of a country in population and wealth may bo (ranged to some extent by tho development and practice of insurance. That the Australian colonists are fully alive to the advantages of life assuranco may be gathered from the reports presented to tho members or shareholders by the officos transacting this class of business in their midst. 'Ihe Australian Mutual stands foremost amongßt the offices at the Antipodes, and has attained to dimensions which are really astonishing. It assured last year, on 7629 policies, a total of .£2,577,723, producing in new annual premiums the large sum of .£91,189. The largest bnßiness transacted by any Home office was that of the Scottish Widows' Fund, which assured during tho year just half the foregoing amount at new premiums of .£44,olo— less than half the amount obtained by the Australian office, which— and moieties seem to bo singularly applicable — is just half tho ago of the Urge ana wealthy Scottish office. No doubt there are in this country a larger number of offices competing for business than is yet to bo found in the particular colony in question, although comletition of the most aotive and aggroasive kind ia not known in Australia, and some sharp passageß-at-arms have at times taken plaoe between at loast two of the colonial companios, of which tho Australian Mutual is one. But even supposing this magnificent Booiety had the field all to itself, and was not hardly pressed by local companios and by branch establishments of leading Home and foreign companies, the amount of business it baa transacted would still appear to bo surprisingly largo. During its entire oxistenco it ha 3 issued 79,564 policies, assuring £28,705,434. Of these, 23,835 have gono off by deaths, surrenders, lapses, and eflluxion of time, leaving in existence at the close of December lost, 55.729 policies, assuring tho grand total of .£20,298,409, at an annual premium of .£077,072. Adding to this the interest realised on the invested funds, £303,675, it (rives a yearly income of close npon a million sterling— £9 80,747. The accumulated fund, whioh was increased during the past year by £575,129, now amonnts to £4,024,713, equal to upwards of seven years' promium income. These figures testify to the hold whioh this office has npon the colonists, and must be particularly gratifying alike to tho , directors, officials, and members. We notice that during the past year the district agency system, which has beon found to work well in New Sonth Wales, has beon introduced into Queensland and Now Zealand. The directors, we are told, havo decided to open a branoh with a local board in Wostern Australia. These extensions of tho ramifications of the office cannot fail to bring in additional business from quarters of the globe hitherto imperfectly workod, and it is impossible to predicate with any approach to accuracy what gigantic results in the shapo of new premiums may have to bo reported in the not very remote future. It is worthy to remark that Mr. Morrico A. Blaok, the actuary of the office, supplied tho Chairman at the annual meeting with a memorandum on tho subject of tontine insurance, whioh has been introduced into the colony by two foreign— i.e., American — companies, and taken up by ono colonial office. Mr. Black ib a strong and uncompromising opponent of this system of insurance, and he pnt his reasons very foroibly. He looks upon it as an immoral contract, and foreign to the true principles of legitimate life assurance ; and moreover, as tho imposition of cruel and exacting conditions is essential to its success, he is of opinion that "its adoption would engender discontont among the members, and involve tho society in disputes which would be fatal to its present popularity." We print the memorandum of Mr. Black on this question in extenso, and oommend it to tho caroful attention of our readers. 140 Q yards Unbleached Sheeting, 2 yards wide, Slightly damaged, in transit ex ship Zealandia, 9? per yard.
