THE GALE. (From our Own Correspondent) Paramatta, Porirua, This Day.
A severe storm passed over tlio distnot yesterday and caused considerable damage to the railway earthworks round the Porirua Bay. The sea washed right over the formation which has been made, and carried a lot of it away. It would appear that the line ought to be at least 18 inches higher to be safe against future storms. Very little damage .was done near the bridge, except that some of the foundation of the store and enginehouse was carried away. The high wind has oausod great havoo among the tents round tho bay, and several cottages built near the soa wera surrounded with water to a depth of two feet, the tide being unusually high.

A heavy north-west gale prevailed this morning and during the afternon, but no serious damage is reported, Tho barometer at Lyttelton is said to have fallen to 28"70, the lowest known for many years. Gisborne, 15th January. There was a heavy north-west gale blowing to-day. Dunedin, 15th January. We have had all kinds of weather, including hail and sleet, with wind from all quarters of the compass to-day. At present we are having it cold, from the north-east, with j rain and occasional hail. At Lake Wakatipu last night it was the roughest weather everremembered. The glass was below 27 inches. From midnight to 6 this morning an extremely heavy thunderstorm raged, shaking the buildings and causing a good deal of alarm. The lightning was very wild, and at times very heavy rain fell.
