CRICKET.

The Senior Cup Matches commenced on the Basin Reservo on Saturday, and a good deal of interest was evinced in the proceedings. The assemblage of spectators was very large, and Mr. Gray's band playod a number of selections during the afternoon in a very pleasing manner. Tho competing clubs were tho Star and the Phoenix. Mansill, of the Stars, won the toss, and oleotod to go to the wickets. The innings was of short duration, the number of runs being only 31, thanks to the excellent bowling of Laweon, Godden, and Holmes. The Phoenix succeeded in putting together 96, M'lntyre, Gray, Burns, and Ashbolt batting well. Luke did some effective bowling, and Miles mode a first-class wicket-keeper for the suocessf ul team. At Karori, on Saturday, a matoh was played between tho Phoenix and Karori Clubs, the town team proving victorious. The Karon eleven went in first, and woro disposed of for seven runs. Thoir opponents made 81, towards whioh Kilner contributed 24, W. Good 18, and Robinson 10. In tho seoond innings the Karori men made 31. A team belonging to the Ponoko Club mot the seoond eleven of the Midland Club on Saturday afternoon, and defeated the latter by 21 runs on the first innings. Tho highest scores on the losing side were Koefe 23, Northoroft 11, and M'Beth 7, tho innings closing for 50. Tho number of runs put together by tho winners was 71, the most sueoossful batsmen being Franois and Rigg 23, and Book 5. The match between tho seoond olevons of tho Union and Ashley Clubs was won by tho former by 60 runs. The matoh played at Newtown betwoeu n mixed eleven of the Ashley C.C. and second eleven of tho Poneke C.C. resulted in a viotory for tho Ashley CO. by 9 runs. For the Ashley Club, G. Boston (17), O. Gillon (18, not out), and E. Eton and Cooper (8 eaoh) wore tho highest soorers; for tho Poneko Club, Mason (10), and Bacon and Dawson (9 eaoh). A cricket match between the employe's of Messrs. Thompson, Shannon and Co. and those of Messrs. Edwards and Groen was playod on the Newtown Pork ground on Saturday lost, and resulted in a viotory for the former by 28 runs. For tho viotors, Messrs. Bond, Penny, and Stevenson distinguished themselves with tho willow, while Bond was most Buocesßful as a bowler. For tho losers not a great doal oan bo said in regard to thoir batting but Messrs. Hand and Green were very otfootivo in bowling thn Btumps of thoir opponents. A roturn match will bo played at an oarly date.
