THE ACCIDENT TO THE S.S. AUSTRALIA.
[Br Telegraph. | [united press association. l Auckland, 15th July. The Australia sailed at G p.m. for San Francisco. The damage to tho Railway Wharf, through her running into it, iB .£l5O. An official enquiry was held to-day, boforo Mr. M'Kollar, Acting Colleotor of Customs. Captain Bannerman, the fourth officer, tho chief engineer, and tho quartermaster were examined, and gavo cvidenco to the effect that the steamer was allowod to come too close to tho Railway Wharf before any effort was mado on tho part of tho pilot to stop her way. Pilot Murray deposed that ho gavo ordors for the steamer to go astern, but that instead sho wont ahoad. He again gave orders for full spood astern, and sho then appeared to tho pilot to gathor quicker way. His reason for running head on to tho wharf was to savo coming down on tho schooner Energy, or tho Thames steamer Rotomahana, which woro on cither side of tho Australia. Tho cvidonco is to bo forwardod to Wellington.
