THE FLOWER SHOW.

TO THE JDITOR. Sir — I was given to understand that the prizes offered to the children at yesterday's flower show were to be for plants or flowers grown by thomselves, and also as an encouragement to do their best. In reading the list of prize-takers, I cannot but think that this has most signally failed. There are very few children that could possibly compete with gardeners' children, as they have every convenience for growing most beautiful plants and flowers, and come out bost as a matter of course. Thoro are others, whoso parents have nice gardens and greenhouses to choose from. On the other hand, hundreds of little ones in this city have only a small plot of ground, and the house window is their only groenhouse. In this they place some little plant, and watch every leaf as it comes out. Those are the ohildron, sir, who, in my very humble opinion, require encouragement. I do not think it would be fair to shut out the children of gardeners or anybody elso, but let there be a prize for both, and to make sure that those plants were looked after by tho ohildron themselves, I suggest that pot plantß be given for prizes, and let them be exhibited at the next show, then the judjoa could easily Beo the amount of care the different plants had received, and the children thomselves obtain some nice varieties. I am sure there -are many kindhearted gardeners, whether amateur or othorwiae, who would give plants towards this objeot ; and I feel sure that no children in Welllington will attempt to compete again against such odds as they have had to do this timo. I am, &c, Sympathetic Mother.
