SOUTH WELLINGTON ELECTORATE. fi ENTLEMEN— The division of the f ity vTT into separate electorates has compelled me to make a choice between the East and West sides of Tory-street. I have decided to solicit the suffrages of the Electors of Te Aro, bat I hope to retain your goodwill and influence, for, believe me, gentlemen, I very keenly appreciate your approbation, and would do much to retain it. I say with all sincerity it is above measure pleasant to me to know that so considerable a number of my fellow-citizens deem me fit represent them in Parliament. I am, gentlemen, Yours faithfully, CHAS. J. JOHNSTON. To the gentlemen signing the requisition. TO THE ELECTORS, TE ARO DISTRICT. f^ ENTLEMEN,— In the face of the requi\Jf sition recently presented to Mr. Charle3 Johnston, and of it 3 acceptance by that gentleman, I do not feel disposed to contest the electi n for your district. I had no personal ambition to serve, my chief object being, in case I had obtained a seat in Parliament to have used the opportunity which it would have afforded me for advocating the construction of certain public works, without which this cifcy cannot attain to the condition which its geographical position and its fine harbour entitle it to. I bave the honour to be, Your obedient servant, WM. THOS. LOCKE TRAVERS. SOUTH WELLINGTON ELECTION. fi ENTLEMEN,— In reply to your requisiVX tion that I would allow myself to be nominated as a candidate to rppresent this district in the Parliament of New Zealand, while thanking you most sincerely for the honour you seek to confer upon me, I must reluctantly decline. Occupying a seat as your representative upon the Harbour Board, I could not, in justice to myselt and those belonging to me, sacrifice tbe additional and larger amount of time required to fulfil the duties of Parliament. Should you at any future time call upon me in like manner, I shall feel it my duty, if possible, to accede to your request. Again thanking you , I remain Gentlemen, Your most obedient servant, PAUL COFFEY, Clyde Quay. To Messrs. Richards, Clayton, Watt, Cohen, and 178 Electors of South Wellington, requieitionists. jgALSALINE, The Great Food Preservative. Report by Dr. Hector, C.M.G., F.R.S., I Colonial Laboratory, Wellington :—: — " Sa.lsai.ine. — This preparation has been submitted to analysis and experiment. It contains nothing that is deleterious, and may be safely mixed with food. It possesses the antiseptic properties attributed to it, and to a very remarkable extent. A tea-spoonful of a solution, obtained by dissolving four ounces in a pint of w ater, when added to a quart of fresh milk, will arrest all change except the rising of the cream, and prevents the milk from turning sour or thickening when standing exposed to the air for a period of at least five days in warm weather. — James Hector."
