[UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchttech, 14th October. There are 27 prisoners to be tried at the criminal session next week, the chargea ranging from arson to libel. The annual training of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry waa brought to a close to-day by a grand review by Colonel Packs The movements were witnessed by several thousand people, a half holiday being observed for the occasion. This Dat. Heavy north-west gales have been experienced during the past two days. Dunedin, 14th October. There has been a very strong N.W. gale blowing here all day. _ Several bush fires have occurred in the vicinity of the town, but bo far it is not known whether much damaze has been done. In the bush fire today at Pine Hill several hundred cords of wood were destroyed ; also, a dwellinghouse, belonging to Barrett and another settler, and a log hut. There are no insurances. At the Snpreme Court to-day, the action of M'Leod v. Eeeves, a claim for JE2OOO for malicious prosocution, waa tried. The circumstances which led to toe action arose out of a scene at tho closa of the Dunedin Exhibition, when some wine was taken, and by the authority of the committea M'Leod was prosecnted for larceny. The result of tho trial was a nonsuit, on the ground that the plaintiff had not proved that there was insufficient cause for the original prosecution. There are 26 incurable patients in the Dunedin Ho?pibal at present. A deputation of the Hospital Committee waited on the Hon. T. Dick yesterday to aak for assistance in establishing a separate institution for them, but no determination was come to, except that the Government would in the meantime authorise the committee to pay for the maintenance of such patients by their friends, wherever this could be arranged. This Day. Bush-fires around Danedin yesterday did considerable damage. One started at Broad Bay and spread with surprising rapidity, causing tho bushmen to fly for their lives. Two cottagas were burnt. Mr. Larnaoh losss over 1000 cords of cut firewood.
