KICH GOLD DISCOVERIES. A PLAGUE -STRICKEN SHrP. RELIGIOUS MANIA. [PER ALBION AT AUCKLAND.] Stdnet, 16th September. Private cablegrams from London to the shippers of moat per Cuzco, from the Orange Slaughtering Company, state that the average rate of s£d per lb was obtained. The total expenses amount to 3Ji per lb. _ Yesterday the Mayor resumed the inspection of the buildings reported to be ur.fit for habitation. He decided, that forty-two were ripe for demolition, and ordered that steps should be taken to have a number of others properly repaired. Melbourne, 16th September. News has been received of the discovery of a new reef at Moliagul, which promises to be extraordinarily rich. lwelvo ounces of gold were obtained from four dishe3 of rubble. A nugget, weighing 87 ounces, was discovered in Bhallow workings at Goldsborough, in the same district. The barque Eden, which came to the wharf late on Wednesday from China and Japan,_ reports that since pailing 12 of the crew died. The vessel was placed in quarantine, the nsnal precautions being taken. The medical officers state that no small-pox ex sted aboard, and that the crew died of the beri-beri disease. A widow named Romo, who was on a visit to her parents at SmythesJale, drowned herself yesterday at noon. She was buffering from religious mania. She had attended religious revivals at Ballarat, where she carried on business as milliner. She was told by the revivalists that she was commissioned by God to regenerate the world. At the inquest the magistrate expressed a very strong opinion that the authorities should

interfere with such cases as that under notico. A largo and enthusiastic meeting met on Wednesday, in the Town Hall, under the auspices of the Salesmen and Assistants' Union, to promote the early closing of places of business.
