CONCLUSION OF THE GREAT WALKING CONTEST. DRUGGING A COMPETITOR. HONORS FOR NEW ZEALAND EXHIBITORS. I'reuter's telegrams.l Melbo drne, 4th December.
Baker, one of the competitors in the walking tournament now proceeding, has been drugged by a spectator, who gave him some beer. Baker is, however, still able to continue the contest. sth December. The finish of the pedestrian tournament was most exciting. Baker walked 307 miles. Swan, the New Zealand competitor, 306, and Seymour 286. The Sorata, on the voyage from Adelaide, had to shelter in Rivoli Bay, as she was nearly sinking. She is now, however, quite safe. The following Exhibition prizes have been awarded to New Zealand exhibitors : — For bulk ale — Vincent and Co., of Christchuroh, Ist ; Ehrenfried, of Dunedin (P), 2nd, also for bottled stout. Adelaide, sth December. The Adelaide Racing Club has confirmed its decision with regard to the disqualification of Mata. Obituary — Sir George Kingston, Speaker of the iSonth Australian House of Assembly. His death took place at Galle.
