This Day. The criminal calendar at present contains ten charges, chiefly of larceny. The charges on the sheet are not nearly so serious as of late. A man fell down the chimney of the new Farnley brickworks on Thursday, a distance of 35ft. He was saved from death by striking against some supports in the descent, but was seriously injured. The Native Lands Commission has finished its Akaroa sittings, and will hold a session at Aparima, Jacob's River, Southland, on 24th March. The hearing of the criminal information for libel brought by Mr. § Stead against the directors of the Daily Times comes on for hearing this afternoon, in the Resident Magistrate's Court. An instance of cheap labor was shown yesterday in the Amberley Court. Two ablebodied skilled blacksmiths were summoned for a debt of £10. They pleaded that they were working merely for food and whatever their master pleased to allow them. The Pioneer Bicycle Club hold the championship races, consisting of two events of 25 miles each, on 17th April,- at Hagley Park. The barquentine Jasper, which arrived yesterday from Mauritius,- reports passing a large dead whale ten miles to the south-east of the Snares. The Harbor Board receipts for wharfage last fortnight amounted to .£llsO. I Up to the 12th March as many as 1321 Volunteer visitors have signified tneir intention to be present at the Easter Review. 654 will be billeted in various houses, , and 374 will live under canvas. They will cater for themselves. Mr. Anderson's paddock in Cashel-street, and Mr. Rirers' paddock in Manchester-street have been placed at ' the disposal of the committee during the I week. •>.>.'> The nights and mornings are now much colder.
