Timaru, 9th September. No election in South Canterbury ever created so much' excitement as the Geraldlne one did. Both parties worked very hard. Mr Feldwick's fide were to sure of winning tbat in the atternoon they published a black-edged card — "In memoriam of Mr. Wakefleld." The result of the poll gives Wakefield a majority of 187, though only 407 out of tbe 730 votes were polled. The Returning Office's announcement was the signal for deafening cheers for Wakefield, who was immediately hoisted shoulder high, and carried up the street to the Star Hotel, from the balcony of which he addressed a large crowd, being cheered to the echo. He said, briefly, that Le was glad to see that, despite every effort used by the Government to iuflueace votes, both Europeans and Maoris, he bad been returned by an undeniable majority. The most disgraceful statements had been published by the evening' paper to his detriment, not one of which any of his opponents dared to make to his fa^e. For the Taieii, Mr. Fulton polled 195 at Maungatiri, East Taieri, and Outram, to Snow's 152. Waitbmata, 9th September. The following is the result of tbe polling :— Reader Wood 369; Macfarlane, 194. Thereturns from sever*! places have yet to come in, but they cannot affect the result. Bulls k, 9th September. Tbe returns as set to hand give Fisher a majority of 99. Any other returns yet to come cannot affect the result. Ombhdnga, 9th September. Tbe following is the result of the polling :—: — O'Rorke, 228 ; Graham, ()9. Albxandra, 9th September. Most of the returns for the Western Maori District are now in, and the Government candidate, Major Te Wheoro, is 236 votes ahead Christchurch, 9th September. The following are the returns ■ for the Southern Maori District up to the present :— Tainui, 268; Paratene, 43; Matenga, 9; Heringi, 37 Three returns are not yet in, but they will not alter the result. Ro'bsbll, 9th September. The following is the state of the poll for tbe Northern Maori Electoral District up to tbe present : — Svitney Taiwhanga, 311; Hone Nahe, 3U6; Heta Te Haara, 201; H ri Ke Tawhehi, 169; Timoti Puhipi, 122. Returns have yet to come in from eight stations, but they will not all be in before Friday.
