RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
<•- THIB DAT. (Before Mr. Mansford, R.M.) ALLEGED PBBJURT. Joha Gib»on Kinross, a well-known Napier merchant, was charged, on the information of Paraiuena One Oue, with having, at Wellington, on or about lriday, the 20th day of October, 1871, falsely, wickedly, and wilfully and corruptly.fomraitted wilful and corrupt perjury in the testimony which he pave upon oath as a witness at the investigation into certain allegations made respecting transactions affecting native lands in the district of Hawke's Bay, and in regard to the working of the Native Lands Frauds Prevention Act, 1870, by a Committee of the Legislative Council of New Zealand, whoa be stated that — " I never gave spirituous liquors as against land." Mr. Reei, M.H.R., appeared for the prosecution, and Messrs. Travers and Chapman for the defence. ' ~^ Mr. Rees, in a lengthy opening speech, stated that he would bring forward evidence to prove that the defendant h d on Several OO ca ions bought land from certain natives, paying for it pwt y in money and partly in spirits and ammunition. Edward Turner was fined 5s or 24 hours' imprisonment for this offence. L4ICBHT. John Doonan was charged with having stolen a knife and fork, valued at 2«, the property of W Young. He pleaded .guilty, but 6aid he was under the influence of drink at the time. Mr Young stated that he had mis«ed forks on previous occasions. Last night accused *cut to his oyster saloon and took up a knife and fork, and wnen witness asked him for it he at once took it out of his pocket and gave it up.
