STATE OF THE ADELAIDE ROAD.

TO THB EDITOR OF THII BVEJUNG POST. Sib,— Can you inform me who is to b'ame for the present state of the Adelaide Road ? Suroly our Councillors are elected to use their own judgment in regard to the wilful waste of the ratdpaye'ra' money. I refer to'the lowering of that portion of iho Adelaide Road oetwepn Drummond and Rtddiford-streets. Before tbe present cutting w-q made we had a pretty fair road, at least the carters with aone-horse dray could take a ton and ha'f of eof 's over any portion of it, but bow it reminds mo of some of our streets over twenty years ago. We have had half a dozen accident* already, and in two coses the shafts were completely brokon nway from the cart. How many more we are likely to have I can't say. I ouJy know that at present the road is simply impassable. , Somo of our Councillors state that pressure has been brought to bear upon tbe Council, and that they were forced to go on with the alteration. At the same time they state that it would bavo been commenced some four months- ago, only the Council bad then no money to go on with it. Now, I should like to ask', have they the money now, and if so why is it that the contractor for lowering tbe road is not to be paid until some three months after he has completed his contract ? in regard to the precsure brought to bear upon the Council, can you tell me where the pressure cime from 1 The Tramway Company deny having used any presaure, and say they could have lafd the line far hotter on tbe old road, it having had a good hard foundation for the sleepers, and I feel quite sure that the Adelaide-road ratepayers signed no petilion or otherwise brought pressure to bear upon the Council ; at leril I can speak for myself .and a do_en others living close to the present cutting. I am not writing tbis letter so much on my own account, but on account of those wbo have to earn their living by their horses and carts, and who, in some cases have been obliged to turn their horses out and dismiss their drivers, finding it impossible to keep them eraployed owing to the present disgraceful state of the road.— l am, Ice., Ratepayer.
