CHRISTCHURCH. 19th May.
William Barnard, butcher, was brought up to-day charged with stealing about 300 sheep, the property of Chapman, ruaholder, Moeraki Downs The case was remanded for a week. Bail was accepted from himself for £200, and from two sureties of £100 each. J. Oram Sheppard was fined £5 for keeping the White Hart Hotel open during prohibited hours. The defence was that the offence was committed in the billiard-room, which is not connected with the hotel. An additional acceptance has been received for the Grand National Handicap, viz., Erin-go-Braga. It is probable that the Queen's Birthday will be celebrated here on Monday, notwithstanding the inability of the Government to alter the day, as Saturday is market day, and the Mayor has received a requisition numerously signed to hold the holiday on Monday. The Drainage Board, at a meeting to-day, resolved to raise an additional loan of £100,000, being a portion of the £'200,000 originally authorised. The debentures will probably be sent Home by the noxt mail.
