Candahar has been occupied by tbe British troops, the Governor previously having disbanded his army, and made a precipitate flight. J [General Roberts attacked a strong body of Afghan irregular forces, killing and wounding 500 of them, and capturing a large numbar of prisoners, with cattle, grain, and stores. Marshal Espartero, the celebrated Spanish statesman, died to-day, aged 87 years. The Public Library at Birmingham has been destroyed by fire. A vast number of rare and valuable volumes were burned.
