(Per Press Agency.) NAPIER. 12th January.

A smart shock of earthquake was felt at 6.28 this evening. PATEA. 11th January.

The natives, acting under instructions from Paribika, have refused to allow gravel to bo taken from tbe Waimate Plains by the side ot tbe Waingongora river to repair the road. Williams and Katene went to talk the matter over, and though the opposition of the natives was strong, and violent language was used, gravei pits were opened and carting commenced. The opposition natives look upon this as literally taking away the land, and offered stronger opposition than to the commencement of the survey. As, however, their ¦prophet, To Whiti, his promised that everything shall be resolved to them in March they have concluded to let the gravel be taken in the meantime. 13th January. Of the £11,000 voted last session for the Mountain-road, only £6000 has yet been obtained for expenditure. The balance would about gravel the unfinished portion from Normauby to meet tbo railway line at Stratford, and if the money were at once granted the work could be done before winter acts in, and thus the road to Taranaki could be kept open. If the money be not at once granted, the

Mountain-road will next winter bo in a worse state than ever, and the money spent on it» formation will be so much thrown away.
