THE WRECK OF THE LA PEROUSE. (Per Press Agency.)
The steamer Platypus arrived at Sydney on the Ist, with the crew and officers of tha ahl» La Perouse. The captain reports he cleared Clarence Hoods on 2tlth ult. with round bark piles 43,000 ft., bound to Lyttelton. Apparently all well, and nothing of note occurred until about half-past 2, when water was noticed washing in. Sounded the pumpa and found nearly 2ft. 6in. The orew immediately commenced hard pumping, but the water still gained, and 4in. were made in half on hoar. At 1 o'clock 3ft. 6in. was in the hold. Kept tbo ship away for Long Point, hoping to reach Richmond bar. At 5 o'clock again sounded the pumps ; found nearly 4ft. The vessel gradually settled down, and at 6 found she could neither fetch the beach nor Richmond; and the water still gaining he took to the boat, but stood by the snip till 9 o'clock, when she canted over on her side and went down head foremost. The La Perouae —as nearly a new vessel, built and owned by Mr. Oulano, of Jervis Boy. She was insured in Metcalfe's office.
The B.s. Taiaroa left Nelson last evening, called at Picton, and arrived here early this morning. She leaves foi Onehunga via Picton, Nelson, and Tarenaki, to-morrow. The s.B. Huia It jt Foxton last evening, crossed the bar at 7, and arrived iaere at 4 o'clock this morning. She leaves for Wanganui to-morrow. The p.B. Manawatu left; Wanganui at 10 last night, arrived here at 12.30 this afternoon, and sails for Wanganui again to-morrow. The B.s. Napier sailed for Blenheim at b o'clock last evening. The Stormbird Boiled for Wanganui this afternoon.' The schooner Ruby, from Kaikoara, was signalled this afternoon. The ships Fernglen and Pleiades will probably be berthed this evening. The pjj. Samson arrived at Opunake on Monday from Wellington, and left same day for West Wanganui, to take a cargo of coal to Waitara. Messrs. W. & Q. Turnbull & Co.'a barque Alexa lias finished discharging ; the cargo tamed out in splendid order. The steamers Kennedy froia Nelson, and Charles Edward from Eekerangu, should arrive to-morrow morning. The 8.8. Raugatira may bo looked for about 11 a.m. to-morrow from Napier. The a.s. Ladybird is expected to arrive, from Port Chalmers and Lyttelton, about noon tomorrow.
