CHRISTCHURCH. 2nd January.
Francis Valpy, late in the Railway Office, was to-day committed for trial for embezzling funds belonging to the Railway Employes*' Benefit Society. Bail was accepted— himself in £400 and two sureties of £200 each. 3rd January. It is stated by the Waimate paper that when the Christcliurch Volunteers were passing through that place they rushed a refreshment stall, kept by an old woman, and did not pay her. The criminal sessions commence on Monday. There are fourteen cases. The action of the committee in taking action against Francis Valpy, the late secretary of the rti.way employees' society, was last night confirmed by a general meeting of the members. Jamas Fallows was admitted into the Hospital, suffering from injuries inflicted at Springfield Coal Mies, through a piece of stone falling os him. There are now sis reaper and binder ageuU in town.
