Mr. G. E. Barton distinctly denies the rumor that he intends to reMgn his seat in the House. He will shortly address his. constituents, but is waiting for a reply from the Government as to whether they will institute an inquiry into his charges against the Judges. This reply is now under consideration by the Attorney-General, and will be furnished to Mr. Barton in the course of a few days. A portion of the Thorndon reclamation sufficient to produce £100,060 will be placed in the market almost immediately, in accordance of the power tafcen by the Government last session. They can legally sell sufficient to produce £120,000, "but hope that £100,000 will be sufficient. It is probable that the city may m ake arrangements for securing the remainder . The land fund for October was the largest yet received for any one month since the foundation of the colony, amounting to £191,000 Of this, Canterbury and Southland contributed nearly the whole. This is due to the fact that the squatters are buying their leasehold runs, from fear that the rents will be largely increased. For November the receipts were, comparatively, small. Up to 30th October tbe total amount received on account of land sales was £600,000, being largely in excess of the sum received during any corresponding period in previous years. It is the intention of the Government to sell only 15,000 acres of the Waimate Plains during the present financial year. The land is estimated to produce £8 per acre, but after providing for the payment of the 20 per cent, due to the Patea County, and the various other charges upon the land fund, only about £100,000 will be left to go into the Colonial Exchequer. We anticipate, however, that the estimate of £8 per acre is considerably below the figure whirh will be realised, e»p»eially if, as is probable, a township is included in the block. > The Minister of Justice has ordered the release of Whitlock, who was recently sent to prison for twelve months in default of paying a fine of £100 imposed upon him in connection with the recent illicit still prosecution at. Wanganui. Further inquiry satisfied the Government that Whitlock was merely a servant to others, and that he knew very little, if anything, about the illicit distillation. Sir William Fitzherbert has resigned his spat as a governor of the Wellineton Colleere. The appointment has been offered to Mr. William Hutchison, but we understand that a reply has not yet been received from him. We regret to have to word the death of Mr. Stephen Carkeek, at Featherston, on Wednesday last. The Inspector of Kerosene, Mr. A. G Johnson, made an official examination to-day of 500 cte'es of kerosene, Devoe's brand, ex Olustee, consigned to Mr. R. S. Waterhouse, of thte city. The result was, that of five samples, two flashed at 98 deg. Fahr., two at 96 deg. and one at 94 degr., the last blazing freely at 96 deer. The flashing point of the Dangerous Goods Act is 110 deg. There wai a very large attendance of members' at the Choral Society's rehearsal of Mendelssohn* " Elijah " last n ! ght. The conductor, Mr. Parker, announced that in consequence of the limited time remaining to complete the preparation of that great work for the Christmas Concert, he would be obliged to a«k the members — both vocal and instrumental — to meet in future twice weekly for practice, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning on Tuesday ne?t. Tho rehearsal was a very satisfactory one, excellent progress being made. Some discussion took place as to tbe advisableness of repeating "Elijnh" as a public concert on Christmas night, but no decision was arrived at. The first meeting of the Wairarapa County Council wr3 held on Wednesday, and lasted six hours. Mr C Pharazyn, who was elected chairman, refused to accept any salary. Tbe salary of the clerk and treasurer was fixed at £250 per annum. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the City Council, 'which «hould have taken place la c t evening, lapsed for want of a quorum of councillors. It consequently will take place this evening at the usual hour.
