RACE BETWEEN HINEMOA AND TAUPO.
The steamers Taupo and Hinemoa left this port last evening with large numbers of passengers bound for Lyttelton to witness the opening of th,e main southern railway between Christchurch and Dunedin. As the steamers left within a short time of one another, and it was known that each intended to do her best to make a quick run down, there were numerous bets as to the length of the relative passages. The Taupo got away at 4.10 and the Hinemoa at 5.55. The telegraphic accounts of their respective times ot arrival differ somewhat, so we give them separately. The official shipping board states the times ot arrival at Lyttelton to have been— Taupo, 7 a.m. ; Hinemoa, 8.33 a.m. Qur own correspondent telegraphs — " Taupo arrived at breakwater at 7.7.; Hinemoa, at 8.20. Splendid passage down; weather beautiful." Captain Andrew, of the Taupo, reports—" Taupo arrived at 7 exactly." Captain Fairchild wires to vs — " The Taupo arrived at breakwater at 7.5 ; Hinemoa, at 8 30. The Taupo's passage occupied 14 hours 54 minutes ; Hinemoa's, 14 hours 35 minutes." Thus, the Hinemoa seemß to have made slightly better time than her rival. It is only tair to mention that the Hinemoa was in ballast, while the Taupo was deeply laden.
