At the licensing meeting to-day a considerable number of wine and beer licenses were granted, mostly in cases of restaurants. The license to the Al was again refused, although it was stated the hotel would be finNlied in ten days. Tho Bench expressed an opinion that there had been great delay. Mr. Coker, late of the Empire Hotel, applied for a license for a new home to be built by him. The application was opposed, but the Bench stated the license would bo granted if the premises when completed were satisfactory. A license has been granted for an hotel at Sumner, which, when finished, will contain 135 rooms. 4th September. * At the Supreme Court ye3terday, in the suit of Jeffreys v. Jeffreys, the husband sought for a divorce on the grouud of his wife's adultery. The jury found for the petitioner on all the issues.
