SPECIAL TO THE POST. ROBERTS, THE BILLIARD PLAYER. THE MEETING AT BALCLUTHA. HAUGHTON TRYING TO QUASH INFORMATION ON TECHNICAL GROUNDS. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) DUNEDIN. 6th September.
Haughton's counsel is taking steps to set aside the information on grounds of informality. The Guardian cuts up Little Nell most unmercifully, whereat people are enquiring whether the loss of advertising favors has anything to do with it. Roberts' agent offers Weston £30 to play. If this is arranged a good match may bo expected. At a crowded meeting of the electors of tho Clutha district held at Barr's Hall last uight, the following resolutions were passed by acclamation: — "1. That this meeting fully approves of the course the member for tho Clutha lias pursued iv connection with the proposed Constitutional changes, and thanks Reid, and those members with whom he acted, for the staud they have taken on behalf of the province. 2.* That no change iv the present Coustitution should be agreed to until a distinct issue upon the subject shall have been submitted to the several constituencies of Otago, and until they shall, by a substantial majority, have declared that a chauge is wanted, and also pointed out the nature of that change. 3. That under any circumstances no change of the original Constitution should be agreed to which does not provide for the inhabitants of this province haviug full and unfettered control of their land, railway, and other revenues, an equitable proportion of such revenues beiug paid towards the liquidation of colonial liabilities, and towards the maintenance of a general legislature, to ha^e to deal with federal matters only. 4. That should the members of Assembly from Otago find they will be unable to secure and maintain these rights for their constituents, it will become their duty to leave the Assembly, so that the electors may be free to take such other measure as may be necessary for tho protection of their Constitutional rights. 5. That a copy of the foregoing resolutions be forwarded to the member for the district."
