At the , inquest on the body of Constable Vernon a verdict of accidental death was returned, with a rider that it was desirable that legislation should be passed imposing a penalty on persons trespassing .on the railway lines. Marks were found in the tunnel showing that Vernon had been feeling in the. dark for recesses, cut for the purpose of affording escape for any person working in, or walking through, the tunnel when" a train was coming. His traces showed he had turned back twenty yards before the train struck him. Had he laid down outside the rails he would have escaped.
