The Southern Cross, steamer, about whose safety much apprehension was felt, has arrived. The Moanatairi h-is produced 15 cwt. of rich specimens, and has commenced washing up. Caledonian's are quoted at £\G. Cth July. Another case of small-pox to-day. The patient has been taken to the Hospital. At the Supreme Court, M'CWkill, charged with shooting a Maori at Ohiuemuri, has been acquitted. The jury, after ten. minutes deliberation, returned a verdict to the effect that the prisoner w\is guilty of the shooting, bub thab it was clone in sell-defence. M'Caskill was immediately discharged. The New Zealand ITeralcl [<me of the journals in Mr. Yogel's new Press Association] contains a sUnguig article upon the Press Association's English telegram of yesterday. The Herald says it is full of gross inaccuracies, and is compiled in. the most careless manner. It is simply a repetition of the news by the last San Francisco mail, aud is full of stale and profitless repetitions of old , matter. It says the Press Association | must employ competent persons, and it protests against being made to pay wire charges for a long telegram containing nothing, more especially as Greville\s telegrams were transmitted and published several hours before the Press Association's telegram. There is a great panic on the sharemarket. Green 'I-Jarp shaves have dropped to 17s 6d, It is reported that a party of swindlers have had a common purse for buying and selling, in order to rig the market, and thut the amalgam is believed to be spun ous. j ' The Kenilworth has sailed for Samoa, and the Martha Ellen for New Caledonia.
