SUTHERLAND GOLD MINING CO.

We regret that it is our duty to convey the following unwelcome report of the first crushing, the news of which arrived in town on Monday morning : — REPORT OF CRUSHING. 60 tons stone from new tunnel, containing by estimation 30 tons of quartz, yielded of retor ted g»ld .... ... ... 2dwts. 10 tous stone from surface, about middle of claim, all quartz, yielded of retorted gold ... ; 2 dwts. The drive along the reef is 70 feet, the quartz is changed in appearance, and is more like the old tunnel stone. The above is the yield of gold from the quicksilver found in the batteries, copperplates, and ripples. We believe, however, that the washings from the blanket-tables have not yet been put through any amalgamating process, so that till that has been done, it would seem that the full result of the crushing has not been ascertained. — Marlborough Express.

The Wellington, on her way from Picton to-day, called at Keenan's whaling station at Teawiti and broughb aw*y six tons of oil. The whaling party is evidently doing well, as when the Wellington left they were in possession of 8 tanks, each containing 400; gallons of oil, and had a whale on the beach;

THE.-.THAMES GOLDFIELDS. (From jhe New Zealand "Herald Correspondent.) GRAHAMSTOWN. 4fch July. Caledonian.—l paid a visit to this mine 'his moi ling, and can fully confirm the re* oorts that were in circulation—that a most lecided improvement was visible in the old run of gold of the main loda. Since Friday last I understand that here it has been looking very gloomy inched—in fact, at one time (I speak from l.earsay) scarcely the color was visible, and th« lode, which is very hard, barring the 'leart which contains the gold, had run into sandstone ; but to-day it is assuming more of its old charac ter, and gold is very rich in some parts, while over the whole face there is more or less of the precious metal. Driving towards hhe Otago is still proceeding, and the lode here is very rich crushing stuff, with occasional specimens, while the stope that is following is also very good. sth. July, 10 a.m. The Caledonian is loot ing much better, <ome good gold being got trom some small eaders high up in the scopes, while the main run shows gold more freely than for lays past. The lode is now being stripped .nd to-night a quantity of gold specimens >vill be taken out. 8 45p.m; The Caledonian have lodged to-day 504 >zs, making the total in bank 3.543 ozs. The Poverty and Charleston have finished crushing, after about 100 oons having passed through. Already they have 750 OZ3 liard amalgam in hand. There is more to •:ome, and the yield is expected to be about 2^ ozs-per.ton. ; ■ '* The Vulcan machine si irfced to-day, ill the presence of many visitors. Considering the state of the wea her, everything passed off well, the machine working adliiirably. The mine was then inspected, tnd the guests returned, well pleased with -,he prospects they saw. Upwards of 200 tons of stone are in paddock. ;'• ~ The Providence tributers have taken out <ome splendid stona from the old level^and have 150 lbs in hand. -■• ; The Vale of Avoca have crushed 30, tons from No. 2 reef, and obtained the fine yield jf62 OZ3. •.;■., ■■. <■ •-. . • .:./;■ .7 MJJ!
