PRISONERS ENTKENiiIED IN A STRONG POSITION:
A whaling ship landed 180 Maori*prisoners at Whai'eougaonga, five niilesl froni Poverty Bay. They had seized Captaiu Thomas and the ¦ guard *an!d ' bound them up. Can tain Biggs has sb ax-ted with, a few men for Poverty Bay. Volunteers are being enlisted, and i Major Whitmore with the force proceed to-morrow in the Waipara, expected ironi Welliugton. The escaped natives are entrenched in a strong position. The "Wairoa friendly natives have been ordered up. Much alarm exists up-country.
